New Students

There are two different ways to begin.

  • Option 1 — Get in touch and set up a time to meet with an instructor for your first mysore class ahead of time. The instructor will know you are coming and will be prepared to walk you through the beginning steps during mysore class time, and can answer any questions you have prior to getting started. Or you can make an appointment for a private session to get started (please contact us through our website). Expect your first class to be introductory, around 45 minutes long, and to cover the first movement sequences as well as some basic observances and tenants of the practice.

  • Option 2 — Come to mysore class between 6:00am–6:30am on a weekday or between 7:00–7:30 am on a Sunday. Once you’ve gotten started in the practice you can come any time within the class period that allows you to finish by the end of the class period.

Do not eat anything for at least 2-3 hours before class, and it’s best to come well rested and clean. If you have a mat please bring it along.

Note that Ashtanga is typically practiced 5-6 days a week once practice is established. Practicing 5-6 days a week is recommended but not required. To get started and progress in the practice please note that practicing at least 3 regular days a week is essential, as memorizing the sequence requires repetition. If you cannot always attend in person we do have an online meeting you can participate in with the purchase of a monthly membership.

Getting started in a mysore practice can feel intimidating. The room is relatively quiet and practitioners are generally focused on what they are working on. Please know that we’re a gentle group of people and you are welcome and wanted. Everyone has to start somewhere, maybe this is your time to do it.

If you would like to come in and observe a mysore class before getting started to get the feel of it please get in touch at info@aysminneapolis.com and we’ll arrange for that.

Reach out with any questions or concerns.
